Let's go outside! Here's why you should choose an outdoor photo shoot.

If you’re thinking of investing in a new set of headshots, you might be comparing a few different options and styles. It’s important to make the right choice to suit your personality and your brand. I’m Lauren Psyk, a professional female Brighton photographer and I specialise in outdoor photo shoots, taken at locations around Brighton and Sussex. I absolutely love getting out in the fresh air, being creative and meeting new people! So I want to spread the love and show you the benefits of an outdoor photo shoot.

Here are 3 great reasons why outdoor headshots are a great choice:

  1. Colour

Making sure your headshots are bright and colourful is a great way to get them to stand out on social media and draw in your audience. Whether your headshots are for personal branding, social media, or your website, colour is a very important tool. In a studio setting you can be a bit limited in terms of colour, but when I’m shooting headshots outdoors in Brighton, I’m very lucky that there are so many colourful backdrops and locations to choose from! For example, North Laine is very vibrant with its coloured houses, street art and funky shops and cafes. A spring or summer outdoor photo shoot in one of Brighton’s many parks can also offer plenty of fabulous colours. Remember colour can evoke emotions in the viewer - yellow is the colour of optimism and sunshine, while blue is the colour of trust and calm. And it doesn’t just stop with the backdrop of your headshots. Think about adding a splash of bright colour with the outfits you wear for your outdoor photo shoot and the props you bring along. Colour is a big part of my brand - I love to make my outdoor headshots as colourful as possible and work with you to create photos that suit your brand and your personality.

  1. Variety

With an outdoor headshot shoot, you are not just limited to one backdrop for your photos. In fact, during your shoot, we can use as many backdrops as we can fit in and we can be super creative! Usually during my outdoor headshot shoots in Brighton, we’ll take a walk around to several different backdrops, changing outfits and props as we go along. You can think of it like a relaxed adventure! It’s just like walking around chatting to a friend who happens to have a camera with them. This means that we’re able to get as much variety into your headshots as possible. I can capture all of the little spontaneous moments and natural laughter. My goal is to get you to relax so you can show your personality. After your outdoor photo shoot, you’ll have a really diverse set of headshots featuring different settings, poses, colours and props. For example, maybe we’ll start in North Laine and finish on Brighton seafront. This means you’ll have plenty of different photos at your fingertips for a range of uses. Don’t be limited in your headshots - the world is your oyster!

  1. Storytelling

Storytelling is really important when building a personal brand. You have to help your audience to get to know and trust you. Using your headshots is a great way to do this, and it’s much easier to do if you choose an outdoor photo shoot. For example, you can choose a location for your headshots that means something to you. Perhaps it’s your favourite park or cafe. Perhaps a big part of your brand is about connecting with nature - there are so many options across Sussex for beautiful natural settings to help you tell that story to your customers. Perhaps you can often be found working in one of Brighton’s many cafes with your laptop and a coffee. Let’s tell that story in your headshots! Props are another really great storytelling tool. I’ve had people bring all sorts of wacky and wonderful things! Some ideas include a bicycle, a guitar, some books, your dog, your laptop, your yoga mat. The possibilities are endless.

I hope this post has got your creative juices flowing and shown you a few of the many benefits of choosing an outdoor headshot shoot. Not to mention the mental and physical benefits of being outside in the fresh air doing something fun and creative!
